Assam Where?
During the late 1940s and the 1950s my brother and I grew up in the tea growing district of Cachar that was then part of the northeast Indian State of Assam, on the border of what was then East Pakistan and now Bangladesh.

Life in the days of the British Raj: Our bungalow was much more modern but we had similar problems as depicted here.  I recall as a small boy rummaging through my father’s old wartime kit in a box in the kitchen store. I briefly held the tail of a small snake, apparently a deadly Grey Krait, before letting go and running.  The next few minutes were pandemonium as cooks, bearers and my father lashed about with brooms and sticks.
